The
winload.efi blue screen error 0xc000000f is typically caused by a corrupted or missing Boot Configuration Data (BCD) file, often due to a power failure, disk error, or malware. To fix it, use a Windows installation media to access the Startup Repair tool, which will automatically attempt to diagnose and fix the problem. If that doesn't work, use the same installation media to access the Command Prompt and manually rebuild the BCD using bootrec.exe commands.
1. Prepare and use Windows installation media
- Create a bootable USB drive with Windows installation media on another computer. You can use the official Microsoft Media Creation Tool for this, as suggested by Microsoft Learn.
- Insert the USB drive into the affected computer and restart it.
- Enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F12, Del, or Esc) and change the boot order to prioritize the USB drive.
Save the changes and exit the BIOS. The computer will boot from the USB drive. On the first screen, select your language and click "Next".Click "Repair your computer" in the bottom-left corner, not "Install now".
2. Attempt an automatic repair
- From the "Choose an option" screen, select "Troubleshoot".
- Go to "Advanced options".
- Click "Startup Repair". Let the tool run to try and automatically fix the issue.
3. Manually rebuild the BCD
- If Startup Repair fails, return to the "Advanced options" screen and select "Command Prompt".
- Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each one:
bootrec /fixmbrbootrec /fixbootbootrec /rebuildbcd
- If
rebuildbcdasks to add the installation to the boot list, typeYand press Enter. - Type
exitand press Enter to close the Command Prompt. - Restart your computer and remove the USB drive to see if the issue is resolved.
4. Check your hard drive for errors
- If the above steps don't work, the hard drive may be failing.
- In the Command Prompt (from the "Advanced options" menu), type the command chkdsk /f /r C: and press Enter to check the drive for errors.
- You may need to restart the computer for the scan to begin.
